Obituary

Flier of planes, driver of boats and rider of motorcycles. June 27, 1954 – July 8, 2017Ted Harmon, the Fearless Flyer, passed away July 8th, 2017 at home.Ted was born in Racine, WI, the first of 5 children. He attended McKinley, Prairie, St. Catherine's and graduated from Washington Park High School. While working at Twin Disc at age 22 he attended Gateway and received his Associated Arts degree. He went on to obtain his pilot's licenses and discovered his true calling in life; flying.Soon after, he bought the Air Charter Company, "Air Racine". He established a loyal clientele all over the Midwest through his unique customer service and superb flying skills. Ted was a people person and he had the unusual gift of putting passengers at ease who were plagued with the fear of flying, especially in smaller aircraft. In 1992 Ted and his longtime companion, Inga Fox, added the Aerial Banner Towing company, "Air Signs and Banners" and for the following 25 years devoted their lives to their work in Aviation.Ted left a legacy in aviation by the numerous pilots he invested in and trained. All of the many banner tow pilots he trained and who worked for him appreciated him as a person and as a mentor as he prepared them for their future careers in aviation. They respected his knowledge and thoroughness in taking care of his airplanes. He not only taught them to fly he also prepared them for what they had to face inside and outside of aviation – for Life. He built lifelong friendships with his pilots who always kept in touch with him often seeking his advice.Ted's passion was engines from the time he was a little boy. And movement. Whether it was skiing, riding a motorcycle, sailing a boat or flying a plane, Ted could do it. He was a gear head and was rarely without grease on his hands. And when his daughter Heather was young and needed a nap, Ted knew how to make her fall asleep; take her up for a ride!Ted did take time out of his busy life to see the world; traveling the world (circumnavigating it once) through India, Nepal, Holland and other countries and then often to Guatemala, Belize and Chile. Ted loved meeting people and had friends everywhere.Ted loved to fly; it was HIS happy place. He will be missed every day.Ted is survived by Inga Fox, his companion of 26 years; his daughter Heather C. Jarstad (Randy Jarstad); grandson Lukas Jarstad; sisters Hetty Harmon (Paul Taylor) and their children, and Kimman Harmon (Connie Smith); and his younger brother Tom (Meg) and their children; and his cousin Susan Capobianco Eisenbart and her children.Ted was preceded in death by his father Robert Harmon (a pilot in WWII); his mother Barbara Harmon and his younger brother, Tim Harmon.A private service was held at Purath Strand Funeral Home. When you see an airplane flying overhead, know that Ted, the fearless flyer, is in his happy place!
