Obituary

Sylvia Morrison, dearly loved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on April 24. Sylvia loved golden retrievers, diamond rings, Broadway musicals, large-print romance novels and the movie The Quiet Man. She leaves behind countless sweaters and afghans lovingly knit for friends and family. The daughter of Armenian immigrants, Sylvia Dergarabedian was born in Racine. The friends she made while growing up remained her friends throughout her life. Although she didn't learn English until she started first grade at Garfield School, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.On June 9, 1951 Sylvia married Jim Morrison. She loved to say she fell for his blue eyes and easy-to-spell last name. They raised their three children in Racine.Sylvia loved to entertain. For many years, she and Jim hosted Fourth of July pool parties at their home on North Street. Sylvia was the first full-time librarian at The Prairie School, a job she truly loved. When students had trouble selecting a research paper topic, she liked to suggest Amelia Earhart, who was one of her heroes. In her retirement, Sylvia enjoyed traveling with her husband, her children or her girlfriends. Her love of shopping boosted local economies throughout the U.S. and Europe. She and Jim took each of their four grandchildren to New York City where they saw one or two Broadway shows every day during their five-day visits. Smokey Joe's Caf owes its long run in part to Sylvia's support. In 2004, Sylvia fell and suffered a serious stroke. She was fortunate in that Jim proved to be an "Ironman", not only as an athlete, but also as a caregiver. Despite the long-term adverse effects of the stroke, she maintained her sense of humor and a remarkably positive attitude. As she explained, "I decided to be happy." She and Jim continued to travel and she took great pleasure in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. In 2017, Sylvia and Jim moved to an assisted living apartment at Oak Creek Place. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care Sylvia received. The family also thanks nurse practitioner Susan Ward, of Aurora Health, and Dr. Robert Lamberton, of Spring Dental (whom Sylvia affectionately referred to as Dr. Bobby, having known him since he was four years old at The Prairie School.)Sylvia is survived by her husband Jim, their children Jill (Alan) Sahakian of Northbrook, Illinois, Kathryn Morrison of Madison, Wisconsin and Jim (Diane) Morrison of Burnsville, Minnesota, grandchildren Zachary, Joshua, Nicholas (Sarah) and Chelsea Morrison and her lifelong friends Martha Manogian, Loretta Wahlen, Mariam Sahakian and Ann Cherkinian. Interment will be private. To honor Sylvia's memory, the family suggests that you rescue a dog, or support an organization that does. And, for your own benefit, decide to be happy.
