Dr. Susan Marie Guentzel, M.D., age 58, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 18, 2022. Susan was an internal medicine physician in Fort Walton Beach, Florida for the past 30 years. She was very devoted to her patients and to the practice of medicine. Her compassionate care will be greatly missed by her patients and members of the local medical community. Susan was born on August 9, 1963 in Racine, Wisconsin to Warren and Norma Guentzel (Schwartz). She attended Florida State University for her undergraduate degree and went on to attend the University of Florida for medical school and her residency. She moved with her family to Fort Walton Beach in 1992. Susan's caring nature showed in her hobbies as well. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow. She was also an animal lover and always opened her heart and home for any animal in need. Susan's other hobbies included spending time outdoors boating, fishing and deer hunting in Wisconsin.Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Warren (2007) and Norma Guentzel (2020), and her brother William Guentzel (2014). She is survived by her brother Jacob Guentzel, sister Dr. Jane Guentzel PhD, daughters Amanda Applewhite and Natalie Sullivan, granddaughter Layla Applewhite, and her long-term partner Donnie Barber. A memorial service was held in Susan's honor at Davis Watkins Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Florida on Saturday, February 26th. She is being laid to rest at a private family service in Caledonia, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations please be made to Emerald Coast Hospice in her honor. Susan worked with Emerald Coast Hospice for many years, including serving as its Director, and their services provided both her and her family great comfort and support at the end of her life as they have done for so many others.
