RACINE WI – Stanisa "Stan" Markovic, 80, of Racine, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 18, 2021. Stan, born in Gracanica, Serbia on April 8, 1941 to the late Milutin and Ruzica (nee, Ciric) Markovic, was the youngest of five siblings born during WWII in what was then Yugoslavia. His father, a prisoner of war, immigrated to the US after the war and slowly brought his family. Stan was among the last to immigrate in 1967. Having begun his studies in pre-med at the university of Belgrade, he did as most immigrants would have done, he began working immediately. He was employed at Tree Machine Tool Company in Racine while attending University of Wisconsin Parkside where he earned his Bachelor of Arts. The degree allowed him to begin his teaching career, while pursuing his real passion: soccer. He taught German at Horlick High School while coaching soccer at both Horlick and St. Bonaventure High School. Through his determination, he lead his team to the State Championship three times. He also played and coached for the United Serbs in Milwaukee as well. Long-time friends with professional soccer players and media personalities all over the world, he proudly attended the FIFA World Cup in 1998. During the early years, Stan not only helped his large immigrant family get settled, but also served as an interpreter, translator, and education advocate for the community at large. His larger-than-life personality served him well and many today remember Stan as an advocate, mentor, and friend. He was the type of man you met once and remembered for a lifetime. The highlight of his life came in 1995 with the birth of his son Lucas, who he proudly watched graduate from UW Madison in 2017. He married the former Jamie Grau in 2006. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2020. Stanisa was also preceded in death by his brother, Djukan, and sister, Rosa. Survivors include his son, Lucas Casper; and brothers, Uros Markovic and Ilija Markovic of Arizona. Stanisa is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends and kumovi.Funeral services for Stanisa will be held at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Braun Road, on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Good Hope Cemetery in Milwaukee. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:00 a.m.
