Obituary

RACINE – Siegfried "Ziggy" Gustav Johann Bira, 84, passed away at home on Friday, June 27, 2014. Ziggy was born in Dupree, South Dakota on October 15, 1929 to Adolf and Greta (nee, Zander) Bira. On April 29, 1950 he married the former June I. Sell, recently celebrating their 64th anniversary. Ziggy retired from Briggs and Stratton after more than 38 years. He was a very active member of New Hope Lutheran Church, where he served as Financial Secretary and usher for many years, and he took part in the building of the first church. Ziggy was a great example of Christ's sacrificial love and living a life of service. He was known to many as 'the Popcorn Man' as he toured several northside neighborhoods for many years selling cotton candy, snow cones and other treats. Survivors include his wife, June I. Bira; children, Susan (Carl) Babiasz, Rev. Clifford (Carolyn) Bira, Sandra (Dennis) Montey, Cynthia (Shawn) Clifton, Michael Bira and Julee (Aaron) Wrixton; grandchildren, Carla York, Christopher Babiasz, Carl Babiasz, Hannah Machado, Bethany Lakies, Deidre Montey, Rheannon Montey, Matthew Montey, John Talbert, Cameron Clifton, Kelsey Bira, Melissa Bira, Christopher Henkel and Greta Wrixton; and fifteen great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sisters, Joyce (Thomas) Hoffmann and Rita (James) Michaelsen; brother-in-law, Frank (Joanne) Sell; and sisters-in-law, Janet Heckman and Darleen Bira. Ziggy is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and a special 'adopted' granddaughter Mary Tohovitis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Christopher Bira; and brothers, Fritz Bira, Carl Bira and Richard Bira, and brother-in-law Vic Heckman. Funeral services for Ziggy will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield, in the Chapel of the Chimes on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Interment will follow at Wisconsin Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Cemetery Chapel on Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Doctors and nurses at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center and the staff at Season's Hospice for all of their wonderful care and compassion.
