RACINE – Patsy Joan Rubel, nee Abernathy. Our mom, gramma, sister, aunt and friend passed away peacefully Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 12:36 a.m. at Ascension All Saints Hospital after a brief illness. She was the fourth child of Thomas and Mary (nee, Haluska) Abernathy, born at home July 8, 1936. Mom lived her entire 80 years of life in the city she loved, Racine, WI. She attended Hoods Creek School, a small country one-room school house as a child then on to Howell School and graduated from Horlick High School, Class of '54. After raising her five children she went back to school at Gateway and proudly earned her registered nursing degree. She did private duty nursing then worked at Lincoln Lutheran on Prospect Street and finally retiring from Ridgewood Nursing Home as 3rd shift – in charge nurse. Mom loved caring for others. She would say "once a nurse, always a nurse". Patsy always made time for her large and extended family and held a special place in her heart for each one of us. Patsy is survived by her children, James (Sandra) Rubel, Diane Rubel all of Racine, David (Neva) Rubel of Beaver Dam, Michael (Joanne) Rubel of Mayville and Peter (Tracy) Rubel of Red Granite; her grandchildren, Emily Rubel, Christine (Thomas) Lyle, Steven Rubel, Keziah Clinkscales, Chyanne and Brenna Rubel and Russ (Sarah) Kaminski; her great grandchildren, Juliana, Maxine and Jameson Lyle, Zoe and Gavin Rubel, Kaylee and Lydia Dykstra, Allex, Brett and Conner Kaminski; one great great granddaughter, Aspen Pratt; her sister, Marilyn Checki; and many many nieces and nephews. Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mary Abernathy; siblings, Richard Abernathy, Virginia Brown, John Abernathy and Larry Abernathy; sister-in-law, Chleo Abernathy; and brothers-in-law, Albert Brown and Edward Checki. Come to celebrate Patsy's life at the funeral home on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 12 noon with Rev. Stephen Jennings officiating. Entombment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 12 noon. A special thank you for the wonderful and skillful care of mom to the ICU Unit at Ascension All Saints. Also, thank you to St. Monica's for making mom's days full of activities, creativity and fun.
