Obituary

Orlando TweetRacine- Orlando Tweet, 92, passed away at his residence on Thursday, April 3, 2008.Born on December 22, 1915 in Eleva, WI to Andrew and Inga (nee: Thompson) Tweet. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1939 with a degree in Chemistry. He served in the United States Army during WW II, (1942 - 1946) in Figi, Calcuta and India. After serving in the Army, he received a Master's Degree in Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1947. He moved to Racine and was employed at SC Johnson Wax, where he worked for 35 years, retiring as a Senior Chemist. Orlando married Marion J. Holman on August 9, 1952. In 1984, Orlando founded the local US/U.S.S.R, friendship Society. He traveled to the U.S.S.R. five times and to Cuba twice in effort to ease the tensions of the Cold War. He was awarded the Peace Pilgrim award in 1994. He was active on the Peace and Justice Committee of greater Milwaukee and the Racine United Nations Committee. He was a lifetime member of the World Federalists, Lutheran Human Relations Association, NAACP, Valdres Society, and the Norwegian Historical Society. Orlando was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. He also enjoyed working outside and gardening. Orlando is survived by his wife, Marion Tweet, children, Vickee Griffin, Christina (John Carr) Tweet and Jean Ellen (Robert Sill) Tweet; grandchildren, Jennifer and Kristin Griffin, Charles Carr, Andrew, Peder, and Eliot Sill; great grandson, Isiah Griffin; brother, Norman Tweet and sister in law, Vivian Sievert. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew Lutheran Church on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Michael Mueller officiating. Inurnment will take place in West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Andrew's Church or Bread for the World have been suggested. The family would like to thank Orlando's granddaughter Kristin for all of the devoted and loving care that she gave to her grandfather during the last year.
