Obituary

RACINE – Mary Elizabeth Roland, (nee' Wthrow) 82, passed away at home surrounded by her family, and caregivers Thursday, February 5, 2015. Mary was born in St. Joseph, MO on February 15, 1932 to James and Jessie (nee, Butts) Withrow. Upon graduation from Central High School of St. Joseph, Mo. Mary enrolled in Eureka College in Eureka, IL, where she earned a degree in Christian Education and Curriculum. While attending college she met and married Dallas E. Roland June 9, 1952. After being a stay- at -home mom and assisting Dallas with the work of pastoring several churches in rural Iowa, the Roland's moved to Racine in 1969. By the early 1970's Mary was back in school pursuing and obtaining a degree in English Education from UW-Parkside whereupon she became an English Teacher for the students of the Racine Unified School District teaching Shakespeare and Creative Writing amongst other classes at both Horlick and Park High Schools. She was very dedicated and devoted to her students, spending much of her own time counseling, tutoring and mentoring them. After 25 years of service Mary retired. Post retirement for Mary continued to include her lifelong love of animals and with Dallas she helped rescue many Greyhounds. Mary continued to be an excellent cook, seamstress, and the heart of her family. Mary was very active in service work in both her community and her church, and always made everyone she met feel like family. Mary is survived by her husband, Rev. Dallas E. Roland; children, Christopher A. Roland, Hilton "Tony" A. Roland, Ann E. (Doug) Sullivan and Eve A. (Susan MacArevey) Roland; her grandchildren, Ian, Jacqueline, Juston, Molly and Caleb Keith; and her great grandson, Erik Michael. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister -in -law, Metta E. Reiker and other relatives and friends. A memorial service for Mary will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3825 Erie Street, on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeanne Jones officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m.The family would like to extend a special thanks to the dedicated aides, both past and present at Elizabeth Residence of Caledonia; Dr. Carol Potts of the Visiting Physicians Association and Jen Flegle, RN along with the entire team at All Seasons Hospice for all their compassionate care.
