Obituary

RACINE – Martha Loschat, 96, left the struggles of this earth and passed into the loving arms of the Lord on Friday, April 29, 2016 Martha was born in Wajoten, Lithuania on August 25, 1919 to Gustaf and Augusta (nee, Gavenus) Loschat. She had four sisters, Anna, Maria, Augusta, Eve and two step-siblings. Her parents died when she was very young, and from the age of three she was raised by her grandmother. In 1940 she moved to Germany to avoid Russian troops which had moved into Lithuania. During that time, Martha lived and worked in Rostock, Germany. After the war, Martha escaped from behind the iron curtain and for several years lived and worked in Wuppertal, West Germany with her cousin Martha Blumreiter and her family. Leaving most of her family behind, Martha left Germany in 1955 to join her aunt, Bertha Sadofsky, in Racine. Martha was blessed to have many wonderful friends in Racine who were like family to her, especially Russell and Alverona Jacob. Martha retired from Rainfair, Inc., but was best known for her amazing work as a seamstress, doing alterations for many years after her retirement. Martha was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and volunteered at the Racine Lutheran High School Thrift Shop. She loved taking care of her grandsons when they were children, and cooking wonderful German meals for her family. Martha enjoyed traveling in the United States and was fortunate to make several trips back to Germany to visit her relatives there. Martha is survived by her daughter, Gail (Robert) Videkovich of Caledonia; grandsons, Brandon Videkovich of Covington, LA and Matthew Videkovich of Caledonia. She is also survived by relatives and friends in Germany including Maria Blumreiter and Doris Langensiepen; her niece, Irene Haferkorn; and nephew, Alfred Ropenus and their families. Martha is also survived by other relatives and many friends. Funeral services for Martha will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2015 Geneva Street, on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 6 p.m. with Rev. Stephen Jennings officiating. Private family interment will take place at Caledonia Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Thursday evening from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 6 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Racine Senior Club at St Paul's Lutheran Church. A special thank you to the many angels who have helped Martha over the past several years, especially Kris Kurklis-Ohnstad at Lincoln Villas North who enabled Martha to remain in her own apartment as long as possible, many caregivers at Becker Shoop who brought a smile to her face right up until her last days, and Dr. David Zablotney who was always there for her, and us, with advice, compassion and a listening ear.
