Marie J. Meyer, nee Heusdens, died at her Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin home on June 15
th
, just about one month short of her 98
th
birthday.
Marie was born in and was a longtime resident of Racine. She married Raymond G. Meyer Sr. in February of 1947, a marriage that lasted more than 50 years, and raised 8 children. She moved to Flagler Beach, Florida with her husband upon his retirement, but returned to Wisconsin after his death to be nearer her children.
Marie was a highly accomplished painter, working primarily in watercolor but also creating works in acrylic and oils. She trained at the Chicago Institute of Art as a young woman, but created the bulk of her oeuvre after her children were of age. In Florida she joined the
plein air
movement, creating outstanding natural scenes of great beauty. Her work has been featured at various times at the Charles A. Wustum Museum in Racine and other galleries in Wisconsin and Florida. Marie was generous with her time, offering help to other artists, teaching art at Palm Coast College, and often giving her paintings to friends and relatives.
Marie was also a very skilled pianist, occasionally giving concerts and accompanying other musicians and singers on request. Her neighbors begged her to leave her patio door or windows open so they could hear when she played.
She also was a good singer as a younger woman, performing with the Racine Chorale, the Racine Theater Guild, and with the choir of St Mary's Church in Flagler Beach.
Marie made friends wherever she went. After the move to Florida, her Wisconsin friends often called; after moving back to Wisconsin her Florida friends often called. Neighbors gathered weekly in warm weather on her patio to engage in conversation. She did not miss a chance to help a friend when needed or to comfort them in times of sorrow.
Marie is survived by her children Raymond G. (Elaine) Meyer II, Jerome P. (Karen) Meyer, Daniel K. (Chris) Meyer, Laura A. (Daniel) Best, Marion R. (Kurt) David, and Theodore B. (Kimberly) Meyer.
