Obituary

On Wednesday, April 11, 1962, Bennie and Dorothy Eanes welcomed their first child, Marcie, into this world. She would later become the overprotective, loving and only daughter among her three brothers Raullo, Eric and Christopher. Although Regina was born after Raullo, she was quickly summoned back to take her rightful place in heaven. As a child Marcie integrated St. John Lutheran Elementary School and later, Racine Lutheran High School where she developed a great network of friends that lasted throughout her life. She was a proud graduate of Racine Lutheran High School and a graduate of Marquette University. She was an active supporter of her alma mater, participating actively in the Marquette Alumni and Ethnic Alumni Associations. Marcie was a talented, independent journalist and poet whose first love was the print medium. While a sophomore in high school, she developed a passion for drawing and writing. Encouraged by both her mother and mentor, Virginia Hazlett, she published her first article which appeared in Seventeen Magazine. Later, Marcie also served an internship through the American Society of Magazine Editors at Essence Magazine in New York. She began her career as a freelance magazine writer in college. Newspaper reporting was another facet of Marcie's career; she worked for The Racine Journal Times while in college, afterwards for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Grand Rapids Press. Marcie also was a freelance copy editor which led to her most rewarding endeavor, poetry. Marcie's poetry has been locally and nationally published. In the last few years, she has performed her poetry around the country at various festivals.Besides Seventeen and Essence magazines, her writings have appeared in various anthologies: A Cup of Comfort for Friends; Di-verse-city 2011-2014 from the Austin International Poetry Festival (AIPF) Anthology; Revolution and Reclamation, 2014; and Harbinger Asylum 2013- 2014. She was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).Marcie's poetic career flourished while traveling the country with her work in New York, NY, Houston, TX, and Los Angeles, CA. She has performed at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. and Baylor University in Waco, TX. She has performed her poems at venues including the Greenfield Annual Word Festival (Greenfield, MA), the Museum of the African-American Art (Los Angeles, CA) and The Starving Artist Gallery in Houston, TX.Marcie is the author of the poetry collection, Sensual Sounds which explores love in all forms from family to that special someone. Her second collection, Passion's Zest, encourages all to live life to its fullest as Marcie did. Her final publication was Cameo, which is a biographical narrative with select poems. She was fast becoming a fixture in Racine's thriving arts community. She regularly attended Grassroots and Open mic readings.Marcie unexpectedly passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14, 2015 at her home. Besides her brothers, Raullo (Naperville, IL) and Eric (Fort Worth, TX), she leaves to cherish her memories, her beloved sister in laws Gina and Marika, her nephews – Angelo, R. Alexander, Eric Trey, her nieces – Marlena and Justice and a great nephew – Aiden. Also, dear aunts, uncles, cousins, a host of relatives, dear friends of the poetry community and close friends.
