Obituary

Lucy Derderian Racine - Lucy Derderian, 85, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Lucy was born in Racine on February 28, 1922 to Serabian and Serphue (nee, DerHovsepian) Derderian. She has been a lifelong Racine resident. Lucy graduated from Horlick High School in 1940. She went on to receive her Bachelor Degree in Nursing from Marquette University. Lucy served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp from February 1944 until December 1946 in the European Theater. Lucy was Honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. While serving she was awarded EAMET Ribbon, four overseas service bars, Victory Ribbon and Occupation Ribbon - Germany. Following the War, Lucy extended her stay in Germany to assist in caring for wounded German soldiers because of a lack of appropriate medical care. Upon leaving the military, Lucy returned to Marquette and received her Masters Degree in Nursing. She was employed by St. Luke's Hospital from 1946 until her retirement in 1978. She also taught nursing at St. Luke's from 1954 until 1978. She was always very proud of her graduating classes and could not speak more highly of them and their contributions. Lucy was a member of St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church, the Women's Guild at the church, R.I.N.G. and a member of the Countryside Humane Society. Lucy is survived by her brother, James (Mary) Derderian; sister-in-law, JoNell Derderian; nieces and nephews, Ralph (Gina) Derderian, Mark (Barbara) Derderian and Scott (Vicki) Derderian; Susan Derderian, David Derderian; Mike (Vicki) Derderian and Donna (Clay) Kelley. Lucy is also survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael (Joan) Derderian and John Derderian. Funeral services for Lucy will be held at St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Yeprem Kelegian officiating. A Private family interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Memorials may be directed to St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church or Countryside Humane Society.
