Obituary

RACINE Lillian Margaret Anderson Smith, 94, of Racine and Okoboji, IA, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints on Saturday, April 19, 2014. Lillian was born in Weldon, IA, on February 17, 1920, to Oscar and Lina (nee Davis) Anderson. After graduating from Leroy High School she attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA. At Penn she met Cameron Smith, and they were married at Smyrna Friends Church in Weldon on April 6, 1943. Cam was in the Army Air Corps, and the newlyweds lived at military bases until he was sent overseas. A few years after the war they moved to Cam's home town, Okoboji, IA, where they farmed from 1949 to 1957. Then they sold the farm and relocated to Wisconsin with their four children. The couple enjoyed 64 years of marriage before Cam passed away on June 3, 2007. Family and friends knew Lillian as a wonderful cook. Whether feeding hungry farmhands, dazzling relatives with holiday meals, or refining the recipe for the Optimist Club's famous Cheese Fries, she was in her element. Other interests included music, sewing, gardening, nature and wildlife, reading, Scrabble, and jigsaw puzzles—plus Nintendo, which she learned from her grandchildren. She was active in Faith United Methodist Church and volunteered for the Girl Scouts, the PTA, St. Luke's Women's Auxiliary, and the Opti-Mrs. branch of the Wednesday Optimist Club. Summers in Okoboji gave her joy to the end, especially when her grandchildren visited. Lillian is survived by her children, Camille Smith (Forrest Forque), Dennis Smith (Jane), Candace Smith, and Marla Smith (Doug Conciatu); former son-in-law, Gregg Zurawski; grandchildren, Lindsey Smith, Christopher Smith, Emily Smith-Zurawski, and Nicholas Smith-Zurawski; and cousins Wayne Anderson (Loana), Dick Anderson (Gail) and James Delk (Grace). She is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Audlehelm (William); brother, Ardeth Anderson (Barbara); and brothers- and sisters-in-law Byron Smith (Stella), Maynard Smith (Margaret), Byrnard Smith (Dorothy); and Marvelyn Furry (Leroy). Funeral services for Lillian will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 1013 Harmony Drive, with Revs. Listowel Ayensu-Mensah and Lois Grebe officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Wednesday from 4 p.m. A light meal will be served at the church following the service. Interment will take place at the Okoboji Cemetery in Arnolds Park, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Faith United Methodist Church or the Smyrna Friends Church, 2652 295th Ave., Weldon, IA, 50264.The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Drs. Goodrich and Mullane and their staffs for their compassionate care; and to the staffs at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints and Lincoln Village Convalescent Center for their caring presence and the concern shown to Lillian and her family.
