John Outlaw, one of Milwaukee Public Schools longest serving educators, dies. John L. Outlaw was born January 11, 1924. An avid civil rights activist in the 60's, John was elected president of the Milwaukee chapter of the Lutheran Human Relationships Association of America from 1965-1968. John was among hundreds of people who marched Milwaukee's streets with Milwaukee civil rights leader, Father James Groppi, during the civil rights era.A native of Evansville, Indiana, he spent his young life in a rural area, farming his family's land while attending school. He graduated high school at Crispus Attucks, in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he earned (top) scholars ranking. He later served in the Navy during World War 2, attended college in Indiana receiving a teaching certification for secondary education and came to Milwaukee in 1950. He was a teacher since 1956. After retiring in 1987, he came out of retirement to teach as a substitute teacher for 26 more years.In 2010, for his work involving students in his junior high camera club (becoming his students' and young aspiring photographers' mentor), he was honored at the Milwaukee Black Historical Museum and being noted as a highly respected teacher, he also received an Excellence in Education Award from MPS.John also raised eight children. He finished the 2013-2014 school-year, working at MPS through June of 2014, afterwards earlier this fall he succumbed to illness resulting in his death Tuesday afternoon, November 25, 2014 at the age of 90.Manuscripts on his life story were completed by John many years before this date. In recent months before he died, editing work had been ongoing, but family members will continue on until a book will be published in the near future. Services are pending.
