Obituary

Joanne Marie Johnson Racine - Joanne Marie Johnson, 72, passed away suddenly at her home on Friday, March 7, 2008. Joanne was born in Green Bay on January 29, 1936 to Hugo and Ethel (nee, Tracy) Zeitler. She was baptized into Christian faith on March 8, 1936. She graduated from Oconto High School in 1954. Following her graduation, she attended vocational school preparing for secretarial work. During life, she worked in the medical field and as a church secretary. On August 26, 1961 she was united in marriage to Donald A. Johnson at Kingo Lutheran Church, Shorewood, WI. Joanne was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was an avid reader, belonging to three book clubs and worked on crossword puzzles every day. She belonged to two Red Hat groups, one of which she was the Queen Mother. She was an excellent seamstress. Many relatives and friends looked forward to her Christmas poems, and she was often asked to write poetry to help friends celebrate special times in their lives. She enjoyed her friends at Total Women's Fitness, where she 'worked out', and her yearly trips with her friends from her high school days. She was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, serving as church secretary, singing in the choir, quilting and participating in the altar guild, Bible study and the food bank. Joanne is survived by her husband, Rev. Donald; and her children, Rebecca (Jeff) Mengel of Elgin, IL, Stephanie (James) Sorenson of Raymond, Heidi (Douglas) Webb of Burlington and Joel Johnson of Wauwatosa; her grandchildren, Brianna, Natalie, Samantha, Sarra, Blake, Adam and Grace; two sisters, Shirley (Everett) Podebradsky of Madison and Marilyn (David) Gering of Oconto; brother, Robert Zeitler of Cleveland, OH; two sisters-in-law, Joanne Schmid of Onalaska and Sandra (Wayne) Pieper of Albert Lea, MN. Joanne is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, James Johnson; and sister-in-law, Barb Zeitler. The service celebrating Joanne's life will be held at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1015 Four Mile Road, on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. with Pastors Michael Mueller and Carol Baumgartner officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will take place on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the North Cape Lutheran Cemetery, 2644 - 124th Street (Hwy45). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to St. Andrew or North Cape Lutheran Churches.
