Obituary

Harold Sahakian, 92, a longtime resident of Racine, passed away July 22nd at Oak Creek Place. The son of Armenian immigrants, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 1, 1924. Harold was the son of Archak and Mary Sahakian and the loving husband of Mariam (Garougian). He is survived by his wife Mariam, sister Alice Giritlian, and children David (Wendy Zucker), Alan (Jill), and Donna (Ken Marek). He is further survived by his grandchildren Emily (Ilya Winham), Samuel (Brittany Alioto), and Erik, and his great grandson Leo Winham. He is preceded in death by his parents Archak and Mary, brother Edward (Catherine), and sister Lillian. A WWII veteran, Harold achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant in the US Army. During his time with Company F 115 Infantry, he was stationed in France and Germany. While in France, he served beside his brother Eddie and was at the Battle of the Bulge. Harold spent his entire career in the field of education and believed that teachers touch the future, never knowing where their influence ends. He taught at the high school level in New York, earned his master's degree, became a business education administrator at Gateway Technical College, and worked at the Wisconsin Department of Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education. He was inducted into the Educator's Hall of Fame on April 16, 1999. Harold was a long time member of St. Mesrob Church. He and his wife Mariam taught Sunday School for many years. He was involved with Salvation Army and held fast to its mission to meet human needs in God's name without discrimination. Harold believed in finding peaceful solutions and volunteered at the Racine Courthouse in the Dispute Settlement Center. In keeping with that philosophy, he also volunteered as a Peer Mediation Advisor at Roosevelt Elementary School. Because his heart belonged in the classroom, he further volunteered in his wife's elementary school library and his daughter's third grade classroom. The majority of Harold and Mariam's nearly 66-year marriage saw them attending weekly ballroom dancing events. For a number of years, they also found great happiness in square dancing with the Verona Squares. Harold's love of music was evident to everyone around him. His wife's piano playing filled him with joy. Even toward the end he was unable to sit still while she played, waving his arms, tapping his hands and smiling. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 10th from 9:00-10:00am at St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church, 4605 Erie Street in Racine.
