Obituary

RACINE – Florence E. Vacek, 94, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints on Thursday, June 5, 2014. Florence was born in Racine on February 1, 1920 to Wencle and Anna (nee, Peklo) Smerchek. She was a proud northsider and proud of her Bohemian heritage. Florence was raised on a dairy farm on Six Mile Road and was a member of the Horlick High School Class of 1937. On July 12, 1941, she married the late Carl F. Vacek. Growing up one of her proudest moments was when her mother allowed her to make pies for the hired help on threshing day. Florence has always enjoyed cooking, camping, fishing, and visiting the family cottage in Canada. Frequently she is the person that catches the first fish or the biggest fish on family fishing trips. Florence and her husband were members of two schofskopf card clubs for over 50 years. She was also a member of a sewing club for over 50 years and a member of the Sokol Club. For many of her grandchildren's birthday celebrations she created intricate cake designs according to their theme requests. She has also done considerable genealogy research on the Smerchek family. Florence is survived by her children, Cliff (Alma) Vacek and Calvin (Luann "Bea") Vacek; grandchildren, Carl Vacek, Curt (Lorri) Vacek, Caroline (Matt) Marks and Cheri (Tony) Kulik; and great-grandchildren, Laura Vacek, Thomas Vacek, Sari Marks and Charlotte Kulik; sister-in-law, Betty Smerchek. Florence is also survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Daniel Smerchek, Richard Smerchek; and sister, Bernice Stark. Funeral services for Florence will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 2915 Wright Avenue, on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Bohemian National Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at Atonement Lutheran Church on Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Atonement Lutheran Church Quilters, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection or a charity of one's choice
