Racine – Fern Lillian Smith, 92, passed away at her home on Monday, July 1, 2013. Fern was born in Racine on April 6, 1921 to James and Ella (nee, Helding) Clausen. She married Robert M. Smith who preceded her in death. Fern took great pride in being a homemaker. She enjoyed reading mysteries, working in her beautiful flower gardens, and also enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles. In her later years she took great joy from watching the neighbor children play and watching birds from her window or deck. Fern is survived by her children, Tim (Ruth) Smith, Rebecca Lemke; grandchildren, Jason (Jessica) Smith, Joel Smith, Michele (Chris) Beyer, and Jon (Melanie) Lemke; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jared, and Janna Smith, Madelyn and Jameson Lemke. She is further survived by her sister; Carol Gustavson, sister-in-law Julie Smith and other nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her husband Robert, son-in-law Will Lemke, sisters; Joyce Finn, Rhoda Trautman, and brothers, Gordon Clausen, Milton Clausen, Lancer Clausen and Vernon Clausen. A Memorial service for Fern will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park Chapel on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. The family has suggested memorials to be directed to Gentiva Hospice.Special thanks to Gentiva Hospice, especially Traci and Shelley.
