Racine – Emile H. 'Hank' Mathis, Jr., 66, peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, July 15, 2012. Emile was born in Superior, WI on February 25, 1946 to Emil and Anna (nee, Huberty) Mathis. Emile grew up in Superior attending St. Louis Grade School and graduating from Cathedral High School. Following graduation he moved to Racine in 1964 and attended Dominican College. He returned to Superior and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1970. During that time he taught in the Sheboygan Public Schools from 1968 – 1969. Emile returned to Racine in 1970 and worked for LaPort Gallery and London Fine Art Gallery until 1972 at which time he opened Mathis Fine Art Gallery. Emile was a very active participant in community fund raising for over forty years. He worked to revitalize Racine's downtown, servicing on the first board of the Downtown Racine Revitalization Corp., currently D.R.C. He was also a contributor to the Racine Art Museum (RAM), Prairie School, Racine Zoo and numerous other local charities. Over the years Emile endowed two scholarships at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Survivors include his domestic partner, Ron Dunnett; sister, Beverly Ann Spencer; and nephew, Ray Friedick. Emil is also survived by other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise; brother, Ronald; and niece, Terese Ann Friedick. A Memorial service for Emile will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Avenue, on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Private inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the Emile's family at the church on Wednesday evening from 4 until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the UW-Superior Art Scholarship.
