Ella H. Pustol Nuernberg, 97, passed away at Franciscan Place in Brookfield on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Ella was born on November 4, 1927, to Adolf and Erwine (Noernberg) Schachtschneider in Kisielowska, Poland. As a young girl she was separated from her 4 sisters, mother and stepfather during the invasion of their farm (then known as the White Ukraine) during the start of WWII. Ella spent the next several years as a teenager running for her life from the Russians, then from the Nazis. When the war ended, she ended up in Poland, where she married Stefan Pustol and had 5 children. During this time, the rest of her family was able to Immigrate to the US because they ended up in West Germany, which was not communist. In the mid-1950s, they asked the American Red Cross to find us, which they did in 1955. With a leap of faith, we packed up and immigrated to Racine, WI, arriving on November 10, 1960. Ella proudly became a US citizen in 1996. She was active in the numerous churches that she belonged to and played the guitar in most of them. Ella loved to garden and had a tremendous love for animals and nature. She was a survivor. Her survival instincts and strength (stubbornness) allowed her to lead a long life of 97 years.
Ella is survived by her children, Irene Schweitzer (Gary Matthies) of Pewaukee, Krystyna (Dick) Ruetz of Muskego, Waldemar (Nancy) Pustol of Boyceville and Christof Pustol of Berlin Germany, grandchildren Amy (Brian) Govednik, Katie Schweitzer, Erica (Manuel) Ibarra, Adam Ruetz, Nick (Jen) Ruetz, Stefanie (Andy) Maus, Teddy (Jayne) Ruetz, Andrea Samz-Pustol, Erich (Emily) Pustol and Mitchell Pustol, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Hilda Schulz, Hertha Schmidt, Edith Kadach and Elsa Schirmer, husbands Stefan Pustol and Harold Nuernberg, son Henry Pustol and granddaughter Melissa Hansen.
