Obituary

Elizabeth Halberstadt, age 89, passed away peacefully in Racine on June 5, 2018. Elizabeth was born in Oadby, Leischester, England on March 17, 1929 to Leslie and Effie Towers. She was united in marriage to Richard Halberstadt August 15, 1946, when she made her new home in Racine. She was a beloved wife, mother, nana, grand nana and friend, with many interests and passions. Elizabeth looked forward to spring every year as she was an avid gardener most of her life, a passion she inherited from her father and passed on to her 3 children, Joy, John and Lesley. Her garden was always a pleasure for her family, friends and neighbors who often visited for a cup of tea, and to gaze out at the variety of beautiful flowers and delight at the spectacular number of birds that made her back garden their home. She loved all animals, teddy bears as well, and had many wonderful dogs throughout her life. Her passion for dogs led to a thirty year career as the caretaker for Samuel and Imogene Johnson's dogs, which she absolutely loved. She also loved to dance to big band music with her husband Richard, which they started when they first met during WWII in England. You could often find them playing a good game of cribbage, another thing they passed on to all of their children …. including blackberry brandy and the banter that takes place when someone gets a great hand!On Fridays, Elizabeth and Richard were usually seen at The VFW club or Dania Hall having a fish fry and a dance. All the waitresses knew Elizabeth, because she was the English lady who requested malt vinegar. A Brit through and through!Until late in her life, she would visit her brothers and other family and friends in England, which she always looked forward to and often shared with her children. As an attentive mother, Nana and Grand Nana, she found nothing more enjoyable than spending time with her children, grandchild and great grandchildren – going to beaches, parks, movies, and long dog walks which often ended at the ice cream shop. Her family was always her number one priority. As a classroom helper at her youngest child's school, she was known as Zsa Zsa Gabor … clearly she was beautiful, and also had the bee hive hairdo. She was always smiling, loved to laugh, and thought Marilyn Monroe was "smashing", evidenced by her many pictures hanging in the house and the fact that she named her blonde colored Lincoln Continental "Marilyn"We are grateful for all of these and the many more precious memories. She will be missed and forever loved by everyone she knew.Elizabeth is survived by: her children Joy (Jon) Lippmann, John (Tara) Halberstadt, Lesley (Darrell) Zoromski; grandson Bradley (Alicia) Kousek; great granddaughter Evelyn Elizabeth Kousek; Jill Hendrich (Josh), Grandchildren Gordon, Christopher, and Elizabeth; Abby Lippmann (Mike) great granddaughters Alexandra and Ardelle; Darren (Anji) great grandsons Owen and Landon; nieces and nephews brother-in-law Bill Jensen; and the many special friends who have become her family over the years – A special service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 12 noon. Flowers are certainly welcome, as are donations to the Wisconsin Humane Society.Special thanks to Ascension All Saints Hospital Staff and doctors and Grace Hospice Caregivers who provided professional care with a loving touch.
