RACINE - Donald A.Johnson, 90, passed away on Saturday, January 18 at Waterford Senior Living.
Don was born in La Crosse, WI on July 3, 1934 to Clarence and Charlotte (nee, Funk) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm in Cashton, and graduated from Cashton High School. After high school he served in the U.S. Army, where he spent much of his time in special services playing baseball. Don married the former Joanne Zeitler at Kingo Lutheran Church in Shorewood, WI on August 26, 1961, celebrating 47 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2008. Don received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin, and then went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. On June 13, 1965 Don was ordained into the ministry. Following his ordination he served as pastor at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, Horace Lutheran Church in Horace,ND, and First and Bethel Lutheran Church in Rugby, ND. He then came to the Racine area and served seventeen years as pastor at North Cape Lutheran Church in Franksville. He also served for six years on the Pastoral Staff for Lincoln Lutheran of Racine until his retirement in 1999.
Don was an avid Badger, Packer and Brewer fan. He was a regular attendee at both Badger football and basketball games in Madison. He also loved to golf and was an active member of the Racine Lions Club.
Don is survived by his children, Rebecca (Jeff) Mengel of Elgin, IL, Stephanie (Mike Graf) Sorenson of Union Grove, Joel Johnson of Wauwatosa, and Heidi (Doug) Webb of Burlington; grandchildren Brianna, Adam, Natalie (Kyle), Blake, Grace (Alissa), Samantha (Michael), and Sarra; great grandchildren Michael Jr. and Dahlia; and his sister Sandra Pieper of Albert Lea, MN. Don is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Johnson, sister Joanne Schmid, and brother-in-law Wayne Pieper.
Funeral services for Don will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at North Cape Lutheran Church, 2644 Raynor Avenue Franksville, WI (Hwy 45). There will be a visitation at the church from 10:00 until time of service. A luncheon will be served at the church immediately following the service. Interment will take place in North Cape Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to North Cape Lutheran Church or Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN.
