David Alan Schafer, lovingly known as “Dave,” passed away on April 13, 2026, in Racine, Wisconsin, at the age of 74. He was born on May 31, 1951.
Dave was the devoted husband of Diane Schafer, marrying his forever bride on June 9, 1973. Together, they built a life rooted in enduring love—one that carried them through both good times and challenges with laughter, resilience, and faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gottlieb and Helen Schafer.
David is survived by his brothers, John (Carole) Schafer and William “Bill” (Donna) Schafer; his children, Scot (Karly) Schafer, Tracy Bisterfeldt, and Ryan (Melissa) Schafer; and his ten cherished grandchildren: Greta, Violet, Deacon, Harper, Emma, August, Addison, Samuel, Owen, and Sally.
Dave spent much of his career working in sales, but his true joy was found outdoors and among the people he loved. His passion for fishing ran as deep as the lakes he frequented. He earned the affectionate nickname “Shit Weather Schafer,” as friends joked that rough weather often followed him onto the boat. Still, that never stopped the laughter, friendships, and lasting memories made on the water.
In his later years, Dave found a second home at Johnson’s Park Golf Course, where he worked and formed meaningful connections that became like an extended family. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and cheering on his Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.
Known affectionately as the “dog whisperer,” Dave was rarely without a dog by his side. With treats always in his pockets, he welcomed not only his own pets but also those of his children and neighbors, often found relaxing in his chair with a loyal companion curled up beside him.
Dave’s faith was an important part of his life. He carried a quiet trust in God and found comfort in knowing he was never alone. His kindness, generosity, and love for others reflected the values he held in his heart. His family finds peace in believing he is now at rest, welcomed into eternal life and reunited with those who went before him.
Dave was, above all else, devoted to his family. He cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren, valuing every moment they shared. With immense pride, he passed on Wisconsin traditions to his grandchildren, ensuring they enjoyed them to the fullest. One of his greatest pleasures was cooking for others—he enjoyed frying fish he caught himself, sharing large bowls of ice cream with his grandkids, and making pancakes that many considered unmatched. His grandchildren will fondly remember his warmth, humor, and the comfort he brought to their lives.
Diane will forever miss her life companion—his thoughtful Christmas ornaments, his sense of humor, and the enduring, resilient love they shared.
A visitation will be held on May 8, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Purath-Strand Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
Dave’s legacy lives on in the love he gave, the memories he created, and the many lives he touched
