Obituary

Darlene F. Tanner, age 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at The Woods of Caledonia.

Darlene was born on December 20, 1937, in Darlington, WI, to the late Herbert F. and Frances (nee Glasser) O’Brien. She was married to Edward S. Tanner, who sadly preceded her in death in 2018.

Darlene’s greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. She never met a stranger and was happiest when her home was filled with family and friends, laughter, conversation, and, of course, plenty of her fabulous and bountiful food.

Darlene was known for her generous heart and her wonderful baking. During her children’s school years, she was always ready to bake, chaperone, or serve as a “room mother.” She gave her time and talents freely and was always there to lend a helping hand.

An avid reader, Darlene could often be found with a book in hand—sometimes even reading with her eyes closed! She also took great pride in her garden, which was a beautiful reflection of the care and love she put into everything she did. Her garden bloomed from early spring well into the fall.

Darlene leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and family. She is survived by her children, Laura Tanner, Edward “Eddie” Tanner, Randy (Shelia) Tanner, Todd (Stacey) Tanner, and Jerome “Jerry” Tanner; her grandchildren, Rachel, Elizabeth, Andrew, Eric, Brittany, Edward III, Megan, Sarah, Abigail, Melissa, and Jessie; and her sixteen great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her brothers, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

Those who knew Darlene will remember her generous spirit, her welcoming home, her love of family, and the way she could make a meal—and a gathering—feel like something special. Her greatest gift was making people feel loved simply by being together with them. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

A Celebration of Life for Darlene will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Purath-Strand Funeral Home. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
