RACINE - Cornel Carl Johnson, 91, passed away peacefully January 24, 2015 at home. He was born July 4, 1923 to Herman and Sophie (nee: Christopherson) Johnsen in Racine, Wisconsin. Cornel married Virginia Peterka on October 20, 1945. The couple raised three children; Dan (Kathy) Johnson of Madison, Susan Johnson of Racine and Sally (David) Weaseman of Racine. He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Retiring from Bucyrus Erie in South Milwaukee after 35 years, he and Virginia traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada in a vintage Winnebago with close friends Joyce and Clarence Schneider. He enjoyed planting and harvesting vegetables and other crops and most recently enjoyed teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to till the land, plant and harvest crops. He hung bird feeders to watch birds from the window in the home he built and added onto over the years.Cornel is survived by his wife Virginia, son Dan and daughter Susan, as well as grandchildren; Jill (Tom) Josepowicz, Eric (Britney) Weaseman, Trevor (Carol) Jensen, Dana (David) Church, Jesi Johnson, Amber (Nate) Tumpach, Kelly Johnson, Whitney Johnson, Leighanne Johnson and Nicole Johnson, as well as great-grandchildren: Kayle, Kristina, Taylor, Emily, Alyssa, Ayva, Porter and Emma. He doted on his great-grandchildren and enjoyed his time with them. He is further survived by sisters Virginia Webster and June (Boots) Ellis as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Sally, who lost her battle with Multiple Sclerosis in October 2014, his parents; and his siblings, Horold Johnson, Mable (Loyal) Phetteplace, Ginevra (Louie) Planert, Myrtle Cogswell, Howard (Bev) Johnson, Leroy (Marie) Johnsen, Opal Butterfield, Deloris (James) Ahmad, and Marcella (Arvid) Nelson.A funeral service for Cornel will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Michael Mueller officiating. Interment will take place at Country Haven Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at 3 p.m.
