Obituary

Cordelia May Hatfield, 93, passed away on December 9, 2007, at Serenity Terrace in Racine, WI, surrounded by her family. Cordelia was born on May 6, 1914 in Benton Harbor, MI to the late George and Mary (nee: Jung) Firehammer. After graduating with high academic honors from Benton Harbor High School in the depth of the depression, Cordelia worked for many years in the Probate Court for Berrien County, MI. She was hired by a handsome, nationally recognized probate and juvenile judge, who later became her husband on November 19, 1948, and the love of her life. She enjoyed assisting the late Judge Malcolm Keith Hatfield as he applied psychiatric principles in the development of training programs used to transition juvenile offenders into becoming working adults. She helped him to prepare grants, to author a weekly syndicated column and textbooks, and to compile notes and reference materials used in the White House Conferences on Children in a Democracy. Cordelia similarly worked with fervent zeal outside the court, and was rewarded with many honors. After World War II, Cordelia was recognized by The United States Treasury Department for meritorious services rendered in helping to finance the war. She also was included in Who's Who In American Women, the Royal Blue Book, and Who's Who in the Midwest. After her husband died, she was employed as a paralegal assistant by the law firm of Butzbaugh, Page, Butzbaugh, and Dewane in St. Joseph, MI. She always found time to pursue another of her interests, starting a library at Trinity Lutheran School in St. Joseph, MI, using the funds she raised by hosting book fairs. Cordelia also served as a past President of the Valparaiso University Guild, a life member of the Memorial Hospital's auxiliary, and International Platform Association. Cordelia was a bastion of strength for her family after her husband was afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis. Cordelia cared for him physically and emotionally. When he passed away, Cordelia never remarried because as she maintained, 'She was a one man, woman.' Cordelia also made certain that her children were proficient in many activities while achieving academic excellence by earning their 'Doctor Degrees'. Cordelia's friends made her feel special and unique and they were a very important part of her life. How a life is measured may be debated, but what is evident is that a life that touches so many in a positive way has been an unqualified success. Cordelia's life was based on amity and good will, perseverance and diligence, devotion to her family, her religion, and her fellow man. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jerrold Zeitels, MD of Warren, NJ, son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm Hatfield, MD, and Jeanie Hatfield of Racine, WI; six grandchildren, Lauren Zeitels, an MD/PhD student at Johns Hopkins Medical School; Rebecca Zeitels, a junior at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Jonathan Zeitels of Warren, NJ; Mary Hatfield, a freshman at Purdue University; MacKenna Hatfield of Racine, WI, Malcolm Hatfield III of Racine, WI, Dana Mrazek, step-daughter, foreign exchange student in Greenland; a sister, Caroline Luusua of MI, and many nieces and nephews.
