RACINE - Carl Louis Tomasek, age 87, crossed the bar peacefully at home on April 20, 2015. Carl was born on December 19, 1927, in Racine, WI to the late Frank and Frances (Nee: Hanacek) Tomasek. Carl was the fifth and youngest son in his family to serve in World War II. He enlisted in the Coast Guard at age 18 and graduated from William Horlick High School with a deferred class in 1947. Between 1945 and 1946, he served as Seaman First Class aboard the patrol frigate USS Key West (PF 17) in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. Carl maintained a lifelong relationship with the men he served with though ship reunions. He also attended the 1985 commissioning of the USS Key West (SSN 722) and the 2012 Key West Memorial dedication at Mallory Square of the three naval vessels bearing that name between the Civil War and the present.He was a Life Member of the Racine Yacht Club, an initiate in the RYC "Juniors," and an accomplished sailor in the Western Lake Michigan Star Fleet. Carl enjoyed the ongoing camaraderie and friendship of other RYC members, especially the "Juniors." A contemporary commented recently, "He was a real competitor; any day you beat Carly you had a good day on the water." Carl worked as a Quality Control Inspector at JI Case and retired from Multi-Products Company. In retirement he and his wife of nearly 60 years, Janice (Nee: Boehm) Tomasek, enjoyed extended periods of independent international travel throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed reading and puttering in his basement workshop.Carl is survived by his wife, son Richard Tomasek; daughters, Louise Tomasek and Rachel (Ron Anderson) Tomasek; and granddaughters, Lauren and Emily Creasy and Megan Hansen. Other survivors include his sister, Rosemary (Nee: Tomasek) Purdy; brother, James (Geraldine) Tomasek; sister-in-law, Ruby (Joseph) Tomasek, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Frank, John, Edward and Joseph.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, 1904 Green St., Racine, WI. Visitation will begin at 5 PM, with the funeral service at 6 PM and fellowship following. Private interment will be at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
