Billy Ray Fleming, known affectionately as Bill, 86 passed away on June 12, 2024 surrounded by his loving wife and sons. Born at home in Mills County, IA to Leatta Blanch Morse and Donald Grant Fleming. He was one of nine children. Bill graduated in 1956 from Ava High School, in MO, where he met the love of his life Treva Mae Wright, whom he married in Reno, NV on July 2, 1955. Together they raised two sons, Nicholas and Matthew while enjoying 69 years together and providing an example to all on how to truly love one another.
Bill spent several years working in the timber industry in California. Before settling in Rockford, IL with his family. He worked at Chrysler in the Belvidere Illinois Plant and retired after 34 years. He was a proud and active member of the UAW. After retiring, Bill and Treva moved to Holcomb, IL where he built a home with his own two hands that they enjoyed for over 20 years while hosting an annual community celebration every October. Family and friends were known to travel from all over the country to enjoy his 'famous' chili and his company each year.
Bill was an avid woodworker for many years. You could often find him out in his barn surrounded by sawdust and projects that he was working on. He developed an interest in planes and worked to receive his private pilot license. He generously shared his interest with family and friends, often giving a once in a lifetime opportunity of flying in a small cessna airplane to so many people. He passed his love of flying on to his grandson, who obtained his license as well. Even though Bill didn't partake, he was known for making homemade wine. Enlisting his family in the process.
Bill would lend a helping hand to anyone who asked. It wasn't uncommon to see him helping his neighbors, children or grandchildren. He was all about family and community. He was a quiet man who showed his love and affection for the people in his life with his actions. Allowing his home to be open to teenagers and family who needed a place to land or simply a good plate of his southern cooking.
Preceded in death by his parents, Leatta and Donald, his brother Ed and his sisters Marjorie, Jean, Donna, Doris as well as his son, David. Survived by his sons, Nicholas (Darlene), Matthew (Jessica), His grandchildren Adam (Christina), Nathan (Ana), Ariel (Shawn) and Jacob. His great grandchildren Owen, Ethan, Oliver and Michelle.
