Racine – Arlyn M. Mitchell, 101, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Arlyn was born in Racine on September 12, 1911 to Joseph and Anna (nee, Veselik) Peterka. On October 3, 1934, she was united in marriage to Hugh Mitchell. He preceded her in death in 1982. Arlyn worked all her life as an in-home caregiver, finishing as a nurses aid at St. Catherine's Infirmary, retiring at the age of 70. Arlyn was a member of the Caledonia Ladies Reading Circle, the Racine Homemakers and was a 4-H instructor. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross, knitting clothes for newborns, and she was also recognized by The American Heart Association for blood pressure volunteering. She enjoyed many crafts, crocheting, sewing, quilting and embroidery. She also traveled extensively in her retirement years. Arlyn is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Mitchell; sister, JoAnn Cormack; and grandchildren, Troy Mitchell, Rodney Mitchell, Rebecca Mitchell, Steven Mitchell and Stacy Mitchell; and great-grandchildren. Arlyn is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerome Peterka; sister and brothers-in-law, Jeanne and Elmer Gorman and Jack Cormack; and her son, Lynn Mitchell. A memorial service for Arlyn will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 4 p.m., with a luncheon to follow. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.
